Image Darkens When Playing From 480p, 720p Source

Hello, I've owned this projector for 6 years and from day 1 I've encountered this problem. The projector displays 480i images perfectly, with good brightness, but when I switch to a HiDef source, the image dimms and shadow detail is completely lost. Adjusting the brightness on the projector barely helps. The projector is connected to my bluray player with component cables. Is it a firmware issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
