Depending on the model and manufacturer of your particular tiller, you may need to make adjustments to keep it going as you shift into gear. Nonetheless, the following general actions are available to you:

Find the carburetor's idle adjustment screw. Typically, the carburetor is placed close to the engine.

To change the idle speed, turn the idle adjustment screw either clockwise or anticlockwise. Your tiller's made and model will determine how to use it, so make sure to read the owner's manual for detailed instructions.

Start the tiller and give it some time to warm up.

Put the tiller in gear and watch to see if the engine stalls or keeps running.

Adjust the timing if the engine stalls.
