Onkyo Txnr737 & Sony Kdl-46ex700 Connectivity: No Sound To Receiver.
Hi, I have an Onkyo TX NR 737 and a Sony Bravia KDL-46EX700 tv.My request are related to no audio signal from the tv while watching tv (tv connected to the co-ax cable from the wall-aerial on the roof:1: While watching the images on tv, what input selector do I choose on the Onkyo receiver to hear the audio coming out of the speakers? (Watching terrestrial Free TV on local channels, with the tv aerial connected to the aerial on the roof, NOT through any other device)2: Is the HDMI cable (with ARC) the only thing that is needed to connect between the tv and amp?3: Even after two resets on the Onkyo to factory defaults, what setting will activate the ARC function on the amp?4: What setting on the Sony tv activates the ARC function?Simply, the connection is like this: Aerial on roof-tv plug in wall-co-axial cable to aerial input on tv.TV HDMI-out(ARC) with HDMI cable(supporting ARC) to Onkyo Main-out (Labelled ARC)This from the Onkyo basic manual, page 3: "To connect the TV and the unit, connect the HDMI OUT MAIN jack of the unit and the HDMI IN jack of the TV using an HDMI cable. With this connection, it becomes possible to display the setting screen of the unit on the TV or transmit video/audio signals from the player to the TV."2. Main frustrating issue: Can't get sound from the tv through the new Onkyo TX NR737 receiver to come through the hi-fi speakers. I think it is buried somewhere in the ARC settings of the tv and Onkyo amplifier. This will get really complicated from now on, my apologies....To start, the tv is 6+ years old and only now do I have a new amp/receiver with ARC capability, so this is my first attempt at getting ARC to work through a receiver/amp.More background info: Onkyo HDMI plugs:6 "HDMI-in" plugs: apparently all are assignable, but... "Main" is an OUT-plug with ARC.-keep this in mind, as I refer to this below over and over. The dvd player is connected with an HDMI cable into the ONKYO's HDMI-1 in plug and all works fine, including sound and picture when I select DVD as an input with the Onkyo remote, therefore the Onkyo seem to work and the speakers seem to work on HDMI 1 to HDMI 6...in short, I can watch and listen to movies. The fact that video and audio goes to the tv, implies that something works in the HDMI cable between the Sony TV's HDMI-In (with ARC) and the Onkyo's HDMI Out (with ARC). The sound from the tv and amp is unbalanced, which leads me to believe that the cable is not doing the ARC thing or there is a setting issue in either of the two devices. I know, that you can delay the sound from settings in the Onkyo, however, I thought that the ARC is supposed to do this, am I wrong?End of background info and start of my no sound through amplifier problem:An expensive HDMI cable (Brand is "Monster") runs from the TV-HDMI (Labelled ARC) to the Onkyo HDMI-in called "Main-Out" (labelled ARC as well) (NB: No number assigned to this HDMI-out connector- probably because it is an out and not an in)For now, I will forget about all other HDMI-in connectors(1 to 6), as I think it all works fine, even though there is a TV/CD selector which is assignable to an HDMI or to the RCA's at the back-bottom-left...confusing.My issue is the Onkyo's "Main" labelled HDMI (with ARC) : This does not have a number, but it is also labelled "OUT", so it's not really an input, apart from the ARC function(hopefully)Also see page 3 of the basic manual pdf:There is a TV/CD button on the remote as well as on the front of the amplifier, (see page 10 and 15), but no associated HDMI-In at the back-only an RCA input(bottom left of back panel). Selecting the TV/CD option on the Onkyo remote or amp results in silence and a blue screen- obviously selecting an unconnected RCA- remember I want to watch terrestrial tv (normal tv-aerial plugged into the TV) in full HD with sound, therefore only HDMI can do this, not RCA or even component(we have PAL tv in Australia and I think Component only works on NTSC in the USA).I know the HDMI-In connectors are assignable, but no option exists to assign any of the "selector buttons" (eg. TV/CD) to the "MAIN" (which is an "out" with ARC) on the back - I know what I'm saying is a bit of a contradiction, however I admit that I'm grabbing at straws. My first assumption was that the "Main" HDMI OUT is assigned to the TV/CD, I think I have to abandon that thought. My Questions in short are:1:While watching the images on tv, what input selector do I choose on the Onkyo receiver to hear the audio coming out of the speakers? (assuming the HDMI cable's ARC works)2: Is the HDMI cable (with ARC) the only thing that is needed to connect between the tv and amp?3: What setting on the Sony tv activates the ARC function?3: Even after two resets on the Onkyo to factory defaults, what setting will activate the ARC function on the amp?My next steps are: a)to swap HDMI cables (with ARC) over to see if I have a faulty cable b)After advice, hopefully find the correct setting on the Onkyo, thank you in advance c)See if the TV has an option that has ARC disabled or something. Your advice will be greatly appreciatedRegards and thank you in advanceDijon
