Removing the battery may or may not work depending on the system. Many newer systems also have a capasitor to backup the CMOS battery which recharges when the system is powered up. You will need to locate the CMOS reset jumper on the motherboard and move the jumper to connect the correct pins. Most cases there are 3 pins.
