To connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod to your home stereo, all you need is a 3.5mm to RCA cable like this cable. Two RCA connectors plug into the back of your stereo and 3.5mm plug into your iPhone's headphone jack. Pretty much every stereo available has an RCA input as standard input on the back. If you want the best possible audio quality, an Apple iPod dock will make the sound even better, but we'll get to it in a moment.

Buy cable

The first thing you will need is a cable. There is a 3.5 mm headphone jack at one end of the cable. It looks like a socket on the end of your Apple headphones. The other end of the table has 2 RCA connectors. These will plug directly into your stereo. The cable looks like this:

You'll need a cable like this, one end has a headphone jack to plug into your iPhone, the other end has two RCA connectors to plug directly into your stereo.

These cables start as cheaply as 1c (like here), but I kind of move away from one that uses cheaper cables. Pretty much anyone can tell the difference in sound on one of these cheap cables, even if you don't know much about music. The difference between a mid-range cable and a high-end cable is less noticeable unless you have a good ear and a good stereo. I use one that costs about $ 25, but you can buy one like this or around it for $ 10 in the middle range and that should be fine. I think Belkin is very reliable. Looks like staying away from anything on eBay

How to plug cable

You can plug 3.5mm directly into your iPod headphone jack, and the other end will plug into your stereo. This is not the best solution (read further down in this article) but it works.

For best results, set your iPhone's volume to about half. If it is very quiet, you may get some noise and hiss. If it is too fast then you may have some distortion.

When plugging into the back of a stereo amplifier, the usual input to use would be AUX-IN, but you can use almost any input you want: CD-INPUT, tape-in, TV-IN, DVD-IN or AUX. -In

Do not use PHONO-IN as it is designed specifically for a record player and does not sound good.

The AUX IN on this Pioneer receiver is called 'ANALOG AUX'. This is where you plug in your iPod dock.

Buy an ipod dock

When you plug your iPhone directly into your stereo as I described above there will be very little loss of audio quality. This is because the headphone jack is designed to power headphones, it should not be plugged into the stereo. (You can read about the technical differences here.) For most people this probably won't be noticeable, so unless you have a really good stereo with a good set of speakers, the straight cable works fine. Will do.

If you are after the best possible audio quality in your stereo, equal to or better than a CD player, you can purchase a "dock" for your iPhone.

Apple sells iPod and iPhone docks for the new Lightning Connecto here, but for older iPods that have a Lightning connector, Apple doesn't sell this product anymore. Even his own support article (dated February 15) asks you to plug the iPod directly into your home stereo from the headphone jack. (This will work, but it certainly has an inferior sound quality to the dock.)

So, for the best sound quality, you'll need to track a second-hand iPod or iPhone dock that suits your iPhone or iPod.

On eBay you have to do something like this:

"Apple Universal Dock Genuine"

"Apple Dock MA045"

"Apple Dock MC746LL"

"Apple Dock A1371"

Or they are still available here and here on Amazon.

This is an Apple iPod dock. It has a 'line out' output on its back. (Jack to the left in the photo above). Using the line level will give you better sound quality than using a headphone socket. The reason for this is that the line out is designed to eject a signal that perfectly matches a home stereo that has a 'line'.

The output of the headphones on the iPod is not the correct 'line out', it is a headphone level. It is different. A headphone output is expecting a pair of headphones and while it will still work fine, you can lose some high-end or low end or clarity by using it as a line out instead of a headphone out. The dock gives you a proper 'out line' which will be the exact voltage and impedance to match your line in your stereo. This is important for the best sound quality.

Note that the latest iPhone dock (iPhone 6 and newer) does not have a line out.
