I Cannot Turn On Cc On Vizio Tv

When I go in to the HDTV settings as directed on my Vizio TV model E3D320VX using the original remote it will not allow me to arrow over to CC. Nothing we have tried so far has worked

Vizio 42" kept displaying Closed Caption: On at the top right of the screen. And no matter if I turned it back on and then off again, could I get rid of the words at the top right of the screen.

Eventually I went to the Menu on my FIOS TV box and went to MENU>SETTINGS>TELEVISION>MODES>DISABLE/ENABLE to finally get rid of the text on the screen. Sheer luck that I tried that setting because I have no idea what it is or what it has to do with Closed Captions. But so far seems to have worked.
