External Monitor

original screen broke..why wouldn't the external value work?

Providing your laptop boots up with a broken screen you can change the display options using the Fn and F5 simultaneously to change the display priority to its alternative setting.

However I have attached a link to the user guide:

Page 175 explains this operation.

If it does not work then a new screen would be your only option as the laptop display may be locked due to the failure.
