Turn Off E Mail Alerts

I do NOT want any E mail alerts beeping at me constantly. I do want text alerts. How do I turn off the e mail alerts completely but keep my text alerts. I have a Samsung S390G

Open your settings menu. select accounts and sync. turn off sync automatically. That stopped the notifications every few minutes. And to get the best data speed turn off allow sync in background (if that option is available on your phone)and when you want to check your gmail, refresh your inbox manually in the gmail app.
