The HDD may have failed but have you attempted to play anything you have stored on the drive. The dvd tray should be opened manually, there is usually a small pin hole in the dvd faceplate or around the tray for manual opening. when you power the unit on listen for a whine as the HDD revs up to speed, if you can hear that then it's not dead, it could be that some data has been corrupted.
