Acer Aspire 7540-1284 Notebook Computer
My husband and I were searching for a notebook computer that has the following attributes that were very important to us:1. CPU Reliability and speed! The AMD Athlon II x2 processors (2.0GHz) and ATI combination are very efficient, reliable and operates surprisingly cool and quiet for its size! It runs basically silent, even with the fan on high! We tend to run very complex and CPU burning programs so speed and reliability are key to our computing needs! I've been running a distributed computing application on it which keeps both processors working full tilt all the time!
2. Large and stunning screen! We required a large screen and were not happy with the "normal" sized ones! The 17.3" 16:9 display screen is super bright (with brightness controls linked to Fn+Left/Right arrow keys). This gives us the ability to utilize multiple windows so we can be truly multitasking. There is a HDMI port for using the laptop as a media player so you can connect the notebook to your TV with stunning results! Installed video memory has 256MB and the video output has a ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics processor.
We can perform other multimedia projects and can realize many impressive results! The HD color is a vast improvement impressive upgrade from the traditional LCD monitors!
3. Full standard keyboard with numeric keypad! This notebook has all that we need! I use Excel and also perform many accounting duties so I find the numeric keypad a must have timesaver! Both my husband and I have large fingers so when we use smaller notebook models we fat-finger the keys constantly - a real pain! The keyboard key presses are very responsive and we have increased our productivity by at least 65%.
4. A track pad that is sensitive and responsive! This model has a large multi-touch touchpad and the included software has a lot of configuration options available that can be configured to each of our needs! We sometimes install an external mouse with one of the little nano receivers and can still use the touchpad or not since we can turn the touchpad on or off as needed. The track pad can be a bit hypersensitive but affords the ability to go back or toggle easily between windows once you get used to it! You get the nice touch of disabling it for typing mode!
5. Gigabyte Ethernet port! This unit can handle the following data link protocols: Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, and also includes the wireless protocols: 802.11b/g/n , Bluetooth, and 802.11b/g/n.
6. Decent sound! We were very happy to find the Dolby Home Theater HD audio support surround sound with 3rd Generation Dolby audio enhancement installed!
We never had to Acer Customer Service or Acer Tech Support for any reason, so we cannot comment on that subject.
This laptop never had any problems that we could not solve ourselves. We did get rid of the bloatware that usually gets installed with new computers - a pain, but wanted a clean computer. Other than that, this model gets used every day for at least 6-8 hours, has never had a BSOD, is extremely reliable. We are very happy with this notebook computer, having purchased it from HSN for $565.00 with free delivery!
In conclusion, if you're looking for a good all-around workhorse with a stunning monitor and a great layout that will never disappoint you, this is the laptop for you. You will be hard pressed to find another notebook with this set of specifications for under $600!
