De-registering A Handset?

I have aquired a used handset. Can I de-register it and then register it with the base I have? How do I do  this?

I found on a different AT&T phone page this note which worked for my CL82359!! Very happy!

"*331734# followed by menu/select

The phone beeps twice, reboots and then comes back up ready to register to a new base station.
