I believe you're asking about a picture that's too large for the screen. This requires that you adjust "aspect ratio" with a "picture" attribute on your TV or on your cable connection. You should be given a number of choices. The right choice may be called full or normal or something else, and it should fit both a current show and old movies made in the 40s. (For the latter you'd see black bars on the sides.)
