Mint Toshiba Satellite U405d-s2852 With Sudden Black Screen Issue...
Hi. I purchased a new Toshiba Satellite U405D-S2852 in July 2009 right as the 2010 models were coming out. It's been a great machine, with very few maintenance issues. I take excellent care of it. It rarely leaves my desk, remains extremely clean and cool, and has never been dropped or handled roughly. Although it gets daily use, I keep the bulk of my files on an external Seagate plugged into one of the hi-speed USB ports and use the remaining ports for an external keyboard and wireless mouse (and occasional iPod update). I have super security software, update everything regularly, and do a full lid-closed, shut-down every night. Based on good behavior, alone, my laptop should run forever. Unfortunately, however...I shut this problem-free, technological miracle down last night and when I turned it on this morning: (i) the On button lit up brightly; (ii) the fan and system made the usual, friendly start-up noises; (iii) the internet switch light came on; and (iv) the small indicator lights for battery, power cord, and on/off button lit up, BUT the screen remained black...and black...and black. Based on frantic internet research, I've tried every described method of Pressing Buttons and Not Pressing Buttons and Pressing Dual Buttons and Tapping Buttons for every number of seconds or minutes at every conceivable position or angle (other than hanging upside down in gravity boots) and WITH and WITHOUT the battery and/or the power cord, all with NO result. A stealthy, ninja-like attempt to connect an external monitor yielded nohing (except a fight with the Owner of the monitor... otherwise known as My Husband), the caps lock light on the internal and external keyboards didn't even give a glimmer, and after 11 hours and two hysterical breakdowns, I am unable to work, communicate with the outside world, provide for my family, check my bank balance, find a great recipe for mango chutney, okay the schedule for the upcoming family reunion, look at the weather, organize my summer photo album, look for old boyfriends on Facebook, hire a plumber, make the kid's doctor's appointments or play Free Cell. I'm reduced to a sodden, depressed computer-less mess, slumped and staring, hypnotized, into that bottomless black screen, moaning, "p-l-e-e-e-e-s-e turn on, p-l-e-e-e-e-a-s-e turn on..."
I know that a few other sad folks have asked this question before and gotten little response. I'm sure, however, that they all dropped their laptops off steep cliffs, used them as skate boards and scattered oatmeal cookie crumbs across the keyboards as if they were dinner plates...thus, deserving friend and useless motherboards. I mean, it's 2012, PEOPLE...haven't we invented some magic way to fix this problem yet?! Help? (Please respond soon, as I've hidden in the closet with the MacBook Pro I stole from my daughter and her footsteps are getting nearer all the time...). Thank you.
Signed,

If you are not getting any video output at all even with the monitor being plugged in, I would give the strong possibility of motherboard and/or graphics (most likely intergrated into motherboard) failure and you should take it to your local pc repair shop or buy a new laptop depending on the repair bill.

It is the video chip on the motherboard. Over time the airway passage for the fans get clogged up with lint and stuff causing the heat to not dissipate from the motherboard which will cause the video chip to overheat and actually lose the solder connection on some of the balls of the chip. It happened to mine and it can be fixed by either reballing the chip or reflowing it. Reballing cost more but is a longer fix I think.
