I Put 18 Minutes On My 'timer', But Was The Microwave Operating, Now Dead

I was supposedly using the timer for 18 minutes, but in fact, turned on the microwave with nothing in it for 18 minutes...it overheated.  The fan came on for a few minutes, then stopped.  When I tried to use the microwave oven, it wouldn't heat anything. Is there something my husband can do to repair it, or is it permanently dead?
