Doesn't Recognize Disk Drive

My Gateway SX2800 intermittently recognizes that it has a disk drive. When I go to "Computer" it is not listed, and the door will not open or close, except once in a while unpredictably. Maddening problem...any suggestions? Do I need a new drive?

Based on the product specifications provided by Cnet.com, Gateway SX2800 has a Serial ATA/SATA cable and port. Since you have mentioned that it cannot detect the hard disk drive, you have to check this SATA cable if properly connected to the port. I provided the image for SATA cable below for your reference.
