New Cartridges Don't Work.

I have recently moved after not having used the printer for about eight months. When I went to print it said to replace the cartridges, which I did, with an extra set I had bought in the past. But when I went to print it said the same thing, replace the cartridges. So I bought new cartridges and when I put them in the printer said replace the cartridges. What should I do?
