Why Does My External Mic Not Work On The Canon Eos 5d Ii

I bought an external Rode mic and when I connect it does not switch tot his mic but still records with its built-in mic. I also tcried to connect a Zoom H4N but this also does not work. Could this have anything to do with firmware or do you think that the camera has to be repaired. I have the camera for more than two years now and never tried this option before.....
