The "standby" message when trying to scan could be indicative of a hard drive problem. Turn the machine off, disconnect and reconnect the hard drive, and see if the error is resolved. If not, try to back up any info on the hard drive (address book, any stored docs, etc.) and then try reformatting the hard drive.
