How do you turn on close caption? Does it make any difference if I'm using HDMI settings instead of component settings?

It won't make any difference for closed captioning if you are using HDMI versus component. Since I don't have an Insignia remote right in front of me I cannot give you the step by step way to do it, but there will either be a closed caption button on your remote (a little CC, sometimes in red.) or it is in the menu under picture settings or audio settings.
