Opening the HP Pocket media Drive is as simple as peeling back the hardened plastic label on the usb connection end and removing the two small phillip head screws hidden there. Once the screws are removed the drive carrier will slip out the front of the enclosure and the hard drive can be easily replaced.

Here is a YouTube video that shows the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=OvZZmWhSfl8&ucbcb=1

The two black stripes on either side of the unit have to be pried off.  Once off (and do this carefully, since they are held on by plastic tabs) you will find 4 phillips screws holding the end caps and the hard drive in the case on each side.  This is will let you access everything once you have pried the black plastic side panels off.

BOTH kcmjr and frdafury are correct. The Personal Media Drive series used several different assembly methods. My HD1600 (early 160 GB PMD) used kcmjr's method. The side strips can be removed simply by prying up the rear end about 1/8 inch and then pulling towards the rear. The side strip will pull off the two clamshell lips fairly easily. Pulling the side strip out and away from the body will likely damage the side strips permanently. The end of the side strip is under the rear decal but will clear the decal when it is ready to be pulled out toward the rear of the drive (ie, in line with the drive body, not away from the drive body).

I suspect frdafury's method was employed on later drives thus I cannot speak to it. There is a utube clip on this method here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=OvZZmWhSfl8&ucbcb=1
