Emachines D4362 Shuts Down

I have an emachines D4362 P4 with GB of ram. It is fast and has run very well for 7 years, once hard drive replaced, windows XP, Norton A/V. Recently, when I turn it on, it does correctly into windows and after a few minutes shuts down. If I restart it will soon shut down again. If I wait 6 to 8 hours it will run for 5 minutes and shut down, the longer it is off the longer it runs, the sooner it is restarted, the quicker it shuts down.  I have been able to copy my docs and photos to an external hard drive over the last couple of days.  SO, while it is on, it runs Ok, just the shutdown. Is it the power supply or heat? It is old but unlike many emachines it is a P4, and very fast. What can I do to try to repair myself?

It sounds like you are on the right track.

I would wager that this is either a bad power supply or a processor heat issue.

Are all the fans running?  Especially the CPU cooler.

You have a few options.

  1. Take it to a repair shop for a diagnostic.  You'll have to pay for this (perhaps not, depends on the shop) but they will tell you the issue and then you can fix it yourself.
  2. Buy some parts and try swapping parts out.  This will be expensive since you dont know what the issue is.

Power supply testers are cheap.  That might be a good start.  For example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=power+supply+tester&x=0&y=0

A replacement CPU cooler is also a cheap swapout part: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=40000574%20600035298%20600035326&IsNodeId=1&Description=cpu%20cooler&name=Socket%20478&Order=BESTMATCH

Without physically looking at the system that's about all I can recommend.

it sounds to me like you have some capacitors breaking down a clasic sign of capacitor malfuction is works fine when cool when it heats up the conductivity of the capacitor changes and shorts out turning the machine off given its age it is not a very uncommon problem
