Whirlpool Freezer Defrosting

I have an old whirlpool upright freezer Model# EAV 16X and I need help on how to defrost it. There is no tray underneath, and it's full of food. I have about 7" of ice building up inside. Is there a way to easily defrost this without turning it off? If so, where does the water go, and will it run all over the floor?
