Carb Problem

my troy-bilt bronco lawn trsctor won't start. I have replaced the spark plug, cleaned the air filter and have clean gas in tank. When I had carb air filter off I sprayed starter fluid in the carb. Engine starts and runs until it burns all the starter fluid then dies. I see an electical connector coming from the bottom of carb. Is this some type of kill switch for backfire protection. Before I replaced spark plug and cleaned the air filter the engine backfired several times then quit runnung. How do I replace this carb switch?
