Did you purchase your receiver from the Sony Store in the US?
According to the Warranty Certificate (applies to US only) ALL parts are covered excluding software.
You might want to speak to Sony again and direct them to this link below.
See the warranty here: Limited Warranty (this may be the same as you read)
According to Sony defective items have to be returned for repair, this may be more expensive than buying another remote control but you will need to check this with Sony first. Use the support link at the top of this page for further advice.
You could also try the following link: Replacement Parts & Accessories
Often when people ask this question I recommend they look on eBay, very often you find cheap Sony remotes on there. Just type in [STR-DN850 Remote Control] as the search term. Sometimes people sell genuine remotes after their receiver packs up.
