cannot get tv to turn on - the red light blinks 8 times-help

8 blinks is a problem in the high voltage section (32,000 volts). This wil require a technician to troubleshoot. Expect the in-shop-repair labor cost to be in the $250-$300 plus parts (more if done in the home)

First if it is plugged into a surge protector (electric power strip) try plugging it into the wall directly. It may be requiring too much energy and the power strip isn't fulfilling it completely.

Most commonly the problem your tv set is having is coming from a high voltage circuit fault on the D board or a bad FBT (flyback transformer).The most common problem would be a bad fbt but it could also be the high voltage circuit keeping your tv set on standby mode with an overload of current to your power supply circuit, this is why your tv set turns on and then off.
If the alternate power supply doesn't work, you may need a tecnician to look at it.
