Sharp Pg-f312x Lamp Timer Reset Problem

Replaced the bulb and assembly 5/22/13 with an OEM bulb/generic housing unit from Apex Lamps. The projector works fine. Used manual instructions on page 54 for lamp timer reset and got nothing. Stats still read like they were last month. Called Sharp. Their response was that there is an internal problem and they want my Church to send the unit in for service. Is this really needed? Is there an issue in buying from Apex Lamps? Thank you now for any assistance.
