Why can't I print black and white without color cartidges?

The printer needs all of the cartridges with sufficient ink levels in order to prevent damaging the printhead. Every time a cartridge is replaced, all colors are primed simultaneously thus the need for all cartridges to have ink.

To conserve the color cartridges while printing black and white, make sure to set your printing preferences to print using black ink only. Also, printing in draft mode will help you maximize the life of your ink cartridges.
