Thinkpad 130e Cannot Fully Connect To Operating Verizon Wireless Router. Why?

Present router being used since 2009 with HP Pavillion Laptop(Vista). The new Lenovo machine sees the wireless network by name, and states signal strength excellent, but cannot fully connect(limited) when I put in the WEP security code listed on the back of Router. When you "force" the repair s/w to achieve a connection,it seems there is something it doesn't like about the I.P address(not the security code). Could this be a procedural issue, or is this a situation where the New Lenovo Thinkpad wants only an N router? I cannot remember the type of router Verizon provided a few years back. It does support the Pavillion series, and a wireless printer quite well. Please give me a lead here. I have not yet tried to attach via ethernet cable, but I need to make an wireless Internet connection with the new Lenovo notebook. Thank you for you attention in this matter.
