Clutch Failure

The clutch can fail for several wear-related reasons. The high temperatures generated by friction when the clutch engages cause metal fatigue after repeated use of the trimmer, and one of the boots of the housing can fracture. Fatigue also affects the metal in the springs holding the boots together, and at some point, they may not have enough tension to retract the clutch shoes from the head. A third result of repeated use is that the surfaces of the boots and the housing become smooth, and the shoes slip against the housing.
