Most ink cartridges have some sort of protective device over the print head, if for nothing else, to keep ink from evaporating or the head getting damaged. It may simply be a piece of tape or could even be a plastic cap. You should be able to look at it and see. It will say 'remove' before installing or similiar labeling.
