the speaker have begun to make a static sound whenever I have the plugged in

If you used VLC then Dell doesn't cover the static noise if speaker breaks.

To troubleshoot, try another external speaker, if sound is ok, then the faulty speakers needs to be replaced.

If still sounds static, update audio drivers and restore settings to default.
