Electrical Diagnostic Work

How does the service battery charging system diagnostic work? We were tailgating and listening to the radio, we lost battery, jumped it and drove it.  It seems to be charging, but the battery light and message is still on.  Do we need to reset something to get the light off, or what should we look at.
