How do you open the back of the machine to release a paper jam that tore off

The link provided by Odin is inaccurate. As it pertains to a completely different series than your model and would not include information for clearing a paper jam on your Canon Model.
You can view the troubleshooting steps for clearing a paper jam in the User's Guide located here
Once at the link, scroll down to page 64 (Chapter 8-1), titled "Troubleshooting" "Clearing jams"
