The drive rubber ring has degraded. It looks like it has melted but it is just the rubber mix going all gooey. This is a common fault.

You need to split the cases to get at the driving mechanism. There are some large and obvious screws, including one under the carry handle. There is another smaller one just up above the lever that raises the foot. The last one is a devil to find. You need to remove the screw that holds the small tray-shaped section, on which is mounted the spindle for the top cotton-reel. Then ease the tray-shape out of its location, using a fine knife blade around the edge. Take great care not to break this piece of plastic! Under this you will see a small screw that holds a metal strip right by the drive belt. Remove this screw and you can ease the two halves of the case apart. Bear in mind that there are some wires and strips that connect the circuit boards from one half to the other. You do not need to remove these to get enough space in which to work - Just Be Careful!

You can take out the two screws that hold the circuit board in the way of the bobbin winder mechanism. You will find a gooey mess. Clean it off with a cotton swab and suitable solvent. Replace the rubber ring with the new one you have providently ordered. (or do what I did for a temporary fix---use a tire off a toy truck belonging to my grandson)

Clean out any fluff and threads while you have the cases apart and apply ONE drop of oil to any part that moves against another. Avoid getting oil on the drive belt at all costs!

Assemble in the reverse order, easing the plastic part back into place once you have replaced the little screw. Then insert and carefully tighten the other screws, not forgetting the little one by the foot lever.
