Ap125d Necessary To Drain This Unit Although It Claims To Be Self Evaporating?

I have been having no problems up until now with this unit.  Is it possible that I need to drain the unit even though it is self evaporating?  When I remove the drain plug no water comes out...do I have to connect a hose into the drain in order for it to drain?
