Two things that don't go together are personal electronic devices and water. Pure water is a poor conductor of electricity, but most water contains a considerable amount of minerals that increase the conductivity of the water and can damage electronic components. If your laptop has been damaged by water, do not turn it on until you have properly cleaned it inside and out. Even after a thorough cleaning, there is no guarantee that your laptop will function again. It all depends on the extent of the damage. A spilled glass or water bottle is apt to be less severe than full submersion. Cleaning your computer can increase the likelihood of recovery.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need
Phillips screwdriver
Desiccant
Dry cloths
Distilled water
Plastic containers
Canned air
1
Disconnect the power supply from your laptop and remove the battery.
2
Completely disassemble the laptop. Refer to the service manual for your particular laptop for disassembly instructions.
3
Wipe down any water that you notice on the components. If your laptop was submerged under water or exposed to dirty water, use a small amount of distilled water to carefully clean each component. This will help remove mineral deposits and other residue that can cause a short-circuit and seriously damage your laptop.
4
Dry all components off.
5
Place your disassembled computer parts into separate containers and add some desiccant to each container. The desiccant will remove any residual water from the components. Allow the components to dry in the desiccant for at least 12 hours. Do not use a hair dryer or other heat source to dry the computer parts, as potential over-heating could subject your laptop to even greater damage.
6
Clean off residual particles from the desiccant using a can of compressed air. Reassemble the laptop
