Not Getting Surround Sound

have directv and samsung tv not getting surround sound questions of proper hooking up of cables

Use hdmi if possible, otherise use component cable. Sice you don't state whether your using a seperate audio reciever. If not go into dtv menu, system setup, audio and select your choice.
