Loud Grinding Noise When I Turn On My Samsung Hln617 W - 61 Inch Rear Projection

In addition to the loud noise, the picture has become faint. The noise sounds like a fan grinding. This past weekend, i left my blinds open with the back of the tv exposed and it was sunny so I am not sure if that caused some type of overheating, which is causing the grinding noise. Best Buy said I may have a worn-out bulb that needs replacing. Please advise

I went through this....it's the color wheel. You will find it in many pieces when you disassemble the set. IF you have not already had a new light engine since new it will probably need one as well. Not hard to replace but getting the set back together with the picture centered is a real challenge. You can get the wheel for about $ 95 on line. I am up for a new set...will NOT get another DLP; too many moving parts and wear items!

Sounds like the color wheel is bad, or one of the cooling fans. Those are the only possible parts that can cause the high pitch sound. Samsung does sell replacement color wheels but they are made of glass and are extremely delicate.

You probably need a new color wheel and a technition. The location is very tight and the heat from the lamp will make them shatter.
