On a Ricoh MP 171, the SC878 error code ("TPM system authentication error") is generally caused by 1 of 2 things:
- System firmware not updating correctly
- Defective controller board flash ROM
Ricoh's solution to fix this error code is to replace the controller board but that's a task that you should have a Ricoh-certified technician perform, to ensure everything is done correctly and all settings are preserved/applied.

To reset the error code SC878 on a Ricoh Aficio MP 171SPF, you will need to perform a hard reset of the printer. This will erase all of the printer's settings, including the error code.
To perform a hard reset, follow these steps:
Turn off the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
Wait for 5 minutes.
Plug the power cord back into the printer.
Turn on the printer.
The printer will start up and will display the "Welcome" screen.
