  • If you are having technical difficulties with your printer and the printer is connected to a USB hub, do the following:

    1. Remove the printer from the hub and connect it directly to the computer.
    2. Uninstall the printer software and then reinstall it.
    3. Check your cables and their connections.
    4. Reconnect the USB cable to the computer and to the printer. Make sure there is a direct connection from the computer to the printer.

  • There may be a problem with the way the printer software created the USB protocols in your system.ini and config.sys files. You can check this in the Device Manager.

    1. Right click on the My Computer icon and select Properties.
    2. Click the Device Manager tab.
    3. Click on the plus sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers. The host controller listed here is the software that runs your USB ports. It is linked to a chipset on the motherboard that requires frequent updates to satisfy the needs of newer products, such as your printer.
    4. Look at the name of the host controller. Some of the more common names are Ali, Intel, AMD, Via, and SIS.
    5. You will need to contact your PC manufacturer for help with updating these specific controllers to the newest driver set. If YOU are the PC manufacturer, look over the manual for you motherboard to find out who makes the chipset for the motherboard. Again, Ali, Intel, AMD, Via, and SIS are some of the more common manufacturers of chipsets.
    6. Look for either Lexmark USB Printer or Other Devices present in the Device Manager.
    7. If you see anything with Lexmark..., click on the plus (+) sign to its left and look for Inkjet Color Printer below it. If it is present, double-click on it. The next screen should report that the device is working properly.
    8. If you see any question marks or exclamation marks in the Device Manager (small yellow icons next to the listings), double-click them for information on what's wrong with the items they are marking. Let us know which items have these marks and what errors they are reporting. This information is useful for troubleshooting your system.
    9. If there is nothing present, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the printer driver software or download a new version from our website. Click here and follow the link to our Drivers & Downloads center.

Parallel connection:

  1. Check your cables and their connections. Reconnect the parallel cable to the computer and to the printer. Make sure there is a direct connection from the computer to the printer (no scanners or switchboxes) as other devices can sometimes cause communication problems between the computer and printer. For more information, please refer to "Printing Issues: Scanners and Other Devices" below.
  2. Remove the power supply cord and reattach it to the printer. The printer should make a noise soon after the power cord is reattached. This is a general diagnostic for minor communication issues.
  3. Verify that your computer is set up for bi-directional communication. Your parallel port mode setting in the computer's CMOS setup will need to be set to either bi-directional or ECP. For help with this, you may need to contact your computer manufacturer. Refer to the User's Guide from your manufacturer for information on contacting the vendor. (If you are using a USB connection, you should try a parallel connection as well.)
  4. If the printer does not work when connected directly to the computer port and you have tried steps 1- 3 above, there may be a hardware problem.

Printing Issues: Scanners and Other Devices
Scanners or other sharing devices can cause printing problems. To ensure that this does not happen, please verify that your cables, scanner, etc. are IEEE-1284 compliant.
If the printer prints correctly without the scanner or sharing device(s), the problem might lie with the device. Contact the manufacturer of the scanner or other sharing device for information on how to fix such issues. Note: We do not recommend or support the use of connecting devices such as scanners, even though they may work. Please contact the manufacturer regarding communication issues with the device concerned
