Unable To Get And Stay Connected To Carrier

battery fully charged - phone powers up ok - when calling or texting, sometimes the connection is made to the carrier but within a second or two - connection fails. Tried to reprogram with +228 - cannot sustain connection to carrier. Tried manual reprogram - still cannot sustain connection. All other parts (speaker, camera, display etc ) are working fine. Antenna bars show 1.5 to 2.5 bars connecting to carrier towers.What else can be done?
