Printheads Keep Going Due To Lack Of Knowledge On Maintenance.

We have a HPZ6100 (i do not operate it by the way). I would like to know how to get the most out of our printheads, we only replaced them yesterday and today it/they are ruined. This is due the carriage, doing its usual maintenance in sleep mode riding across the printer and catching the paper that was inserted in it. Are you supposed to remove this paper while not in use? Are there any other issues we should be aware of so things like this dont happen again as printheads are costly and our lack of knowledge on using the thing are breaking the bank?
