Mixer Head Jams When It Encounters Resistance

I've had this mixer 6 years, which is amazing as I am an avid baker. It has worked smoothly and faithfully until recently. I make a lot of different kinds of dough (cookies to bread) and it has been stressed before when making a particularly large batch of bread dough, where the hook turning slows mid way through kneading but then picks up again. Now it happens the moment it meets resistance. It's fine if the mixture in the bowl is softer, like butter and sugar being whipped or a bread dough that's only just starting to incorporate flour but is still mostly wet. The motor still runs and everything sounds fine, only it won't turn. We've opened it up and cleaned it and tightened screws that were looser but to no avail. Please help! Christmas is coming and we've got a good deal if work ahead of us!
