Need Information On How To Obtain A Voucher For An Unused Ticket.

Unused ticket purched 8/12. Need to obtain voucher and purchase new ticket for travel 8/13. Never received voucher for old ticket which wasn't used due to medical issue.

Your unused Electronic ticket is your voucher, meaning the credit is electronically available in American Airline's reservations system. They don't send vouchers for passengers who don't use a ticket. As long as you cancelled the reservation before the flight departed you should still have the credit with American. You don't need a paper document (voucher) to rebook.

If you don't have your old ticket number, then you may have to do some research to find it because that is how the airline retrieves your credit in the computer.

The airline issues vouchers for other purposes, such as oversold flights and compensation for inconveniences. They don't issue them for unused tickets.

If you had an electronic ticket (E-Ticket) which most likely you did, your original ticket is your travel credit. Hopefully you cancelled your original flight reservations when you knew you wouldn't be able to make the trip. Most airline tickets lose their value if you fail to cancel the reservation before the flight departs. They consider that a No-Show and the ticket no longer has any credit/value.

If you have the original ticket number or a copy of the confirmation, you can call American reservations at 1-800-433-7300 and tell them you have an unused ticket and would like to use it for a new trip. Generally the ticket is only valid for 1 year from date of purchase - so if your ticket was purchased in August 2012, you only have a few more weeks to use it.

Most fares usually have a penalty for changes, so you may have to pay a change fee plus any difference in fare if the new flights are more expensive than the original. They may waive the change fee if you can provide medical documentation as to why you couldn't make the original flight. It's not a guarantee, but you should certainly try.
