How Do I Set Acer Aspire 5750 Laptop To *not* Have Wi-fi On At Power-up?

Hi.    I've just bought an Acer Aspire 5750 laptop. Every time I switch thepower on, the Wi-Fi light on the laptop LIGHTs UP (ie it's active, andpresumably the laptop is transmitting radio waves). I don't want this to bethe case, and would be very grateful if you could please tell me how to setthe laptop so that at power-on, the Wi-Fi light is OFF. I *CAN* press <Fn>+<F3> to toggle the light OFF and ON,  but don't want to have to switch it OFF every time I power the laptop on. You see, I'll only be using the Internet occasionally, and so would like thepower-on default to be "Wi-Fi *OFF*". I can't find any mention of what I want to do in the Generic Acer Manual(pdf) that comes with the laptop. I do hope you can help me. Thanks. John

Hi, there are a couple of different ways you can disable automatic Wi-Fi:

- Disable your wireless adapter.  To do this, open the network connections from the Control Panel, select the wireless adapter's properties, and choose Disable.  Then, when you want to use the computer's wireless adapter, simply go to its properties and choose Enable.

- Disable the Wireless Zero service.  Windows uses a service called Wireless Zero to control the wireless connections.  If you disable this service, the wireless adapter will not try to connect to anything.  To disable Wireless Zero, go to the Run bar in the Start menu and type "services.msc" then press Enter.  In the Services window, scroll down the list to Wireless Zero, right click it and select Properties, then choose Stop and after that choose Manual for the startup type.  Then when you want to use wireless, go back into the Services window and select Start for Wireless Zero.

If you use a third-party wireless utility, like the one that comes with a Dell or HP computer, you'll have to disable that service as well.
