Over Is Off, But Top Element On And Extremely Hot.

I have a whirlpool oven. The part number is 8053291. After baking for about an hour, I turned off the oven. However, about 15 minutes later noticed the oven's light was on and went to turn it off, but learned it wasn't the light it was the top element and the oven was extremely hot. I tried to turn the oven on and back off, the broiler on and back off, but the over would not turn off. I finally turned off the breaker, which shut down the oven. Do you know what caused this to happen and how I can fix?
