Not Hearing Sound Bar When Playing Dvd Movie

We have our dvd plugged into our tv. We have our sound bar plugged into our Direct TV box. Sound bar works when we are watching tv, but when we watch dvd, the sound bar does not work. please advise as to how to set this up correctly. Thank you. Paula
