Sounds like he might be in a area that might not have good coverage ad that would keep your call from going through.

He may have incoming calls from your number blocked. Thats how androids do when a blocked caller tries to call. Its also how it does when there isn't a signal. Make him show you your entry in the contact list and hit options. if there is a check mark next to block incoming calls then, well, get ready to hear a really good excuse.

Then again, you did say you keep calling..
