Changing Trimmer Head On Troy-bilt Tb6044 Xp

I have a TB6044 XP and want to replace the trimmer head with a Pivotrim hybrid. But cannot remove the existing (original). Pivottrim tech support told me to insert a small Allen wrench in "the hole" in the bottom of the gear housing, then to "spin" the old trimmer head off the shaft. There are actually equidistant square cuts in the bottom of the gear housing and one can rotate the trimmer head to a corresponding square cut on the head. I inserted a small screw driver which theoretically locks the movement of the gear shaft to spin the trimmer head off, but the head would not budge. What am I doing wrong?
