1. Gather the necessary tools: Before you begin, make sure you have the following tools on hand: a screwdriver, a pair of needle-nose pliers, and a replacement pull string.
2. Prepare the trimmer: Lay the trimmer on a flat surface, such as a workbench or table. Remove any screws or bolts securing the starter cover using the appropriate screwdriver.
3. Access the recoil assembly: Once the cover is removed, you'll see the recoil assembly. Use your screwdriver to carefully loosen the screws or bolts holding it in place. Set them aside in a safe place.
4. Disassemble the recoil assembly: Take note of how the components are arranged in the recoil assembly. Using needle-nose pliers, carefully remove the retaining clip that holds the pulley in place. Gently lift the pulley away from the assembly.
5. Remove the old pull string: Locate the old pull string inside the pulley. Unwind it completely, and then remove it from the pulley. Be cautious as the pulley may spring back when the tension is released.
6. Install the new pull string: Begin by threading one end of the new pull string through the hole in the center of the pulley. From the inside of the pulley, secure the end of the string with a knot. Wind the new pull string clockwise around the pulley until it sits snugly, making sure to align it with any notches or guiding marks if present.
7. Reassemble the recoil assembly: Carefully slide the pulley back into the recoil assembly, ensuring it rotates freely. Then, reattach the retaining clip to hold the pulley in place.
8. Test the recoil assembly: Give the pull string a gentle tug to ensure that it retracts and extends smoothly. If there are no issues, proceed with reassembling the trimmer.
9. Reinstall the recoil assembly and cover: Place the recoil assembly back into position on the trimmer, aligning the screw holes. Use your screwdriver to reattach the screws or bolts, securing the recoil assembly. Then, reinstall the cover and tighten any screws or bolts.
10. Test the trimmer: With the pull string reinstalled and the cover secured, give the pull cord a few test pulls to ensure everything is functioning properly
